PURE DANCE DETROIT BRANCH WHAT IS PURE DANCE? PURE DANCE is collective of dancers and drummers who take music and dance out into the streets for the purposes of healing and peace. Movements from ancient sacred world traditions including Middle Eastern, Chinese, Romany gypsy, Israeli folk, Flamenco, Indian dance and drumming will be incorporated into the PURE experience. Dance and ritual create community, drawing people together both emotionally and physically into a shared sense of the divine. As the community participates, no one is a stranger any longer. Dancers and musicians will be traveling down the sidewalks and into subways and public spaces to share their love of dance and music with the public and to pay homage to specific sites in Detroit.
The Purpose of PURE DANCE:
(Poem written by Jezibell)We move with reverence and mirth,
Dancing the rhythms of the earth,
Seeking the balance between land and tribe,
Ever unfolding, ever alive.
With every breath, we purify,
With every step we sanctify,
Through the heart we consecrate,
Through the body, celebrate.
We are whole, we are here,
We are powerful and clear,
We are centered, we are sure,
We are open, we are PURE -
PURE in focus, PURE in essence,
PURE in presence,
In lines of rippling symmetry,
Then circling 'round in unity,
Encompassing duality,
Embodying community.
Across the sky our blue veils swirl -
We bring our blessings to the world

 Hello wonderful PURE dancers,
Regarding costuming... for skirts, we are aiming for a white skirt with a
clean line near the hips that flares out a little as it nears the floor.
Gypsy and Flamenco skirts will work nicely. Capezio sells Flamenco skirts.
Here are some links to web sites that sell Tribal style belts and
necklaces. Ideally we are going for an AGED silver and gold look.
Something that is too shiny will not work as well. I recommend ordering
pretty quickly as you don't know how long it will take to arrive.

Regarding photos.... they are necessary to take the next step for getting
permits etc, but perhaps we can look on the web to see if there are photos
that already exist that we can borrow. We want to communicate that our
project is about powerful women dancing together in broad daylight, for
the purposes of peace and healing. It is important to distinguish
ourselves from the stereotypical solo glitzy skimpy costumed cabaret look. Some energy needs to go to the photo shoot, but we should not lose our main focus which is working as a group together on a common movement
vocabulary and developing group chemistry. It has been decided that the best date to take our dance meditation ritual to the public is on the weekend of
July 12th, 2008
